AMD introduced Ryzen 7000 5nm "Zen 4" processors for desktops
AMD today unveiled the new generation Ryzen 7000 processors for desktops, based on the Socket AM5 platform. The new Ryzen 7000 series processors introduce the new "Zen 4" microarchitecture, with the company claiming a 15 percent improvement in single-threaded performance over "Zen 3" (the 16-core/32-thread prototype Zen 4 processor over the Ryzen 9 5950X).
Other key architecture features introduced by AMD include doubling the L2 cache per core to 1MB, up from 512KB in all older versions of "Zen." Ryzen 7000 desktop processors are overclocked to speeds well above 5.5 GHz. Based on the way AMD worded its statements, it seems that the "+15%" number includes both IPC gains and gains from higher clock speeds, which account for about 10% (5.5GHz vs. 5.0GHz). Finally, the company introduces a new instruction set with acceleration for AI. The move to Socket AM5 allows AMD to use next-generation I/O, including DDR5 memory and PCI-Express Gen 5, for both the graphics card and the M.2 NVMe slot connected to the CPU socket.
Like the Ryzen 3000 "Matisse" and Ryzen 5000 "Vermeer," the Ryzen 7000 desktop processor is a multi-chip module with two "Zen 4" CCDs (CPU core chips) and one I/O controller chip. The CCDs are manufactured using 5nm silicon process technology and the I/O crystal is manufactured using 6nm process technology, a significant upgrade from the previous generation I/O crystals, which were built using 12nm process technology. The jump to 5nm for CCDs allows AMD to squeeze up to 16 "Zen 4" cores per socket, all of which are "performance" cores. The "Zen 4" CPU core is larger because of more compute to achieve increased IPC and new instruction sets, as well as a larger L2 cache for each core. cIOD comes with a nice surprise - iGPU based on RDNA2 graphics architecture!
The Socket AM5 platform supports up to 24 PCI-Express 5.0 lines from the CPU, 16 of them are for PCI-Express graphics slots (PEG) and four of them go to the M.2 NVMe slot connected to the CPU - if you remember, Intel "Alder Lake" processors have 16 Gen 5 lines to PEG. , but the NVMe slot connected to the CPU runs on Gen 4. The processor has dual channel DDR5 memory (four sub-channels), identical to "Alder Lake" but without DDR4 memory support.
The platform also supports up to 14 USB 20Gbps ports. Now that integrated graphics are available for most processor models, motherboards will have up to four DisplayPort 2 or HDMI 2.1 ports. The company will also standardize the Wi-Fi 6E + Bluetooth WLAN solutions it developed with MediaTek, weaning motherboard developers off Intel WLAN devices.
AMD is betting big on next-generation M.2 NVMe SSDs with PCI-Express Gen 5 and aims to become the first desktop PC platform with PCIe Gen 5-based M.2 slots. The company is reportedly working with Phison to optimize the first Gen 5 SSD for this platform.
AMD is working on several platform-level innovations, like the Smart Access Memory in the Radeon RX 6000 series, which is based on PCIe Resizable BAR technology from PCI-SIG. The new AMD Smart Access Storage technology is based on Microsoft DirectStorage, adding support for the AMD platform and optimization for AMD CPU and GPU architectures. DirectStorage provides direct data transfer between the storage device and GPU memory without the data having to pass through the CPU cores.
