New technology will replace the FLoC algorithm developed in 2021
The American company Google on Tuesday announced the introduction of a new technology called Topics API for its Chrome browser. The announcement was posted on the company's blog on Tuesday.
According to the company, the new technology will replace the FLoC algorithm, developed last year, which could allow to refuse the use of cookies (a small piece of data sent by the web server and stored on the user's computer) by a third party.
Using the Topics technology, the browser will identify a number of topics that have been of interest to the user during the week, based on the search history. Such topics will be stored in the browser for three weeks, and older topics will be deleted. When a user visits the site, the new technology will select only three topics, one from each week, and transmit the search history information to the site and advertisers
Topics will give users the ability to control the data being transmitted, to view the topics selected by the technology and to delete them. In addition, users will be able to turn off the Topics feature in their browsers if they wish. Internet companies, in turn, thanks to the new feature will be able to abandon the use of hidden ways to track the search history of users.
The company stressed that the categories of topics will be selected only on the basis of the search history on a particular device. In addition, information related to gender identity or race will not be included in the groups of topics selected by the technology.
Testing of the new feature will begin in the near future.
